A hotel water heating system is judged on roughly ninety minutes a day. Between the first early checkout and the last late riser, most of your guests want a hot shower at the same time, and everything else the system does well is irrelevant if it fails in that window.

The Morning Peak Is the Whole Design Problem
Hotel demand does not resemble residential demand. A family spreads consumption across a day. A hotel compresses the overwhelming majority of it into a short, predictable window, and that window is when your guests form their opinion of the property.
This is why sizing a hotel system on daily consumption produces systems that disappoint. The correct basis is peak-hour demand, derived from room count, occupancy rate, the number of guests per room and how concentrated your checkout pattern is.
Two hotels with identical room counts can need materially different systems. A business hotel where guests leave for meetings between 7:00 and 8:00 has a far sharper peak than a resort where guests wake at leisure.

Do Not Forget Back of House
Guest rooms are the visible load. They are rarely the only one.
- Kitchen and dishwashing draw sustained hot water through service periods, often overlapping with the evening guest peak.
- On-site laundry is a substantial and continuous consumer where linen is processed in house.
- Spa, pool and gym facilities add their own peaks, usually offset from room demand but occasionally coinciding.
- Staff accommodation and facilities add a second shift-based peak that is easy to omit from calculations.
Systems sized on room count alone frequently underperform for exactly this reason.
Redundancy Is Revenue Protection
In a home, a failed water heater is an inconvenience for a weekend. In a hotel it is refunds, compensated stays, negative reviews that persist for years, and staff absorbing complaints they cannot resolve.
This is why we usually recommend cascaded units rather than a single large tank. Two or three smaller systems operating together deliver the same capacity, but when one requires service the property continues operating at reduced capacity rather than closing its showers.
The capital difference is modest. Weighed against a single night of compensated rooms, it is generally the easiest cost justification in the entire specification.
Temperature, Hygiene and Guest Safety
Hotels carry a duty of care that private homes do not, because guests did not choose the equipment and cannot inspect it.
Stored water temperature matters for hygiene in any system holding large volumes, while delivered temperature at the tap must be controlled to prevent scalding, particularly with children and elderly guests. These two requirements pull in opposite directions, and the standard resolution is to store adequately hot and limit or mix at the outlet rather than lowering the whole system.

Running Cost per Occupied Room
Hotel hot water demand is large, daily and predictable, which is precisely the profile where energy-efficient technologies repay fastest.
- Heat pumps move heat rather than generating it, delivering several units of heat per unit of electricity. For a property with steady occupancy this is typically the single largest reduction available in water heating cost. See heat pump water heaters.
- Solar thermal carries the base load using free energy, with conventional backup guaranteeing supply regardless of weather. Our commercial solar systems scale to 15,000 litres.
- Insulation and distribution design matter more in hotels than anywhere else, because long pipe runs to distant rooms lose heat continuously and also make guests wait, wasting water at the tap.
Retrofit or New Build
On a new build, size on peak hour, plan cascaded redundancy from the start, and design distribution so distant rooms are not left waiting for hot water.
On a retrofit, the constraints are plant room access, existing distribution and the fact that you cannot close the hotel. Phased replacement, where cascaded units are installed progressively, allows capacity to be upgraded without an interruption to trading. This is usually the deciding advantage of a cascaded arrangement in an operating property.
