A conventional electric heater converts electricity into heat, and at best you get back the energy you paid for. A heat pump works differently. It does not generate heat, it moves it, drawing warmth out of the surrounding air and concentrating it into the water tank. Because transporting energy costs far less than creating it, a heat pump can deliver several units of heat for every unit of electricity it consumes.
