5 Ways to Cut Your Electricity Bill with a Smart Water Heater

Water heating is one of the largest recurring energy costs in any building, and most of it is decided by things you can change today. This guide is for people who already own a system and want it to cost less, not for those choosing a new one.

1. Lower the Set Temperature

The single easiest saving. A tank held hotter than necessary loses heat faster to its surroundings, every hour of every day, and accelerates scale formation on the element.

Many systems are left at a high factory setting nobody revisited. Reduce it in small steps until you find the lowest setting that still satisfies your household, keeping it high enough for hygiene and adequate stored volume. If you are constantly running the tap at full hot, the setting is not the problem; capacity is.

2. Deal With Sediment

Sediment settles at the base of the tank, directly over the element. Because it insulates the element from the water, the element must run longer to achieve the same temperature, which you pay for on every heating cycle.

A rumbling or knocking sound during heating is the classic symptom. Periodic draining removes the deposit and restores efficiency, and it matters more in hard water areas where accumulation is faster.

3. Heat on a Schedule Instead of Continuously

If your system supports scheduling, heat before the periods you actually use hot water rather than maintaining full temperature around the clock.

Be realistic about the size of this saving. It is worthwhile when the building is predictably empty for long stretches, such as a home unoccupied during working hours. It is much smaller when demand is spread through the day, and it is not a substitute for correct sizing or good insulation.

4. Insulate the Pipes, Not Just the Tank

Attention usually goes to the tank, but every metre of uninsulated hot pipe sheds heat continuously. Worse, water sitting in an uninsulated run cools between uses, so the next person opens the tap and runs water down the drain waiting for it to warm.

Insulating exposed hot runs, particularly the first few metres leaving the tank, is inexpensive and reduces both energy and wasted water.

5. Fix Hot Water Leaks Immediately

A dripping hot tap wastes water you have already paid to heat, twice over: the water itself and the energy in it. A slow drip that seems trivial adds up substantially across a month, and the heater reheats to replace every drop.

Check hot taps, mixer valves and the pressure relief discharge. A relief valve that weeps continuously is both a cost and a warning sign worth investigating.

6. Reduce Demand at the Outlet

Every litre you do not draw is a litre you do not heat. Efficient showerheads and aerators reduce hot water volume without a noticeable change in the shower itself, and shorter showers remain the most effective single behavioural change available.

7. Maintain the Anode Rod

This does not lower your monthly bill directly, but it protects against the largest avoidable cost of all: replacing the entire system years earlier than necessary.

The magnesium rod inside an enamel-lined tank corrodes so the tank does not. It is consumable, and once depleted corrosion moves to the tank walls. Inspect it periodically, more often in hard water, and replace it when substantially consumed.

8. Know When Replacement Is the Real Answer

Sometimes the system itself is the problem, and optimising around it has limited returns. Consider replacement or upgrade when:

  • The tank is significantly oversized for actual use, so you heat surplus water permanently
  • Insulation is poor and the unit runs almost continuously to hold temperature
  • You have high, steady demand that a heat pump could serve at a fraction of the running cost
  • You have unshaded roof area and a solar system could carry most of the annual load
  • The property sits empty for long periods and an instant heater would eliminate standby loss entirely

What Not to Expect

Smart controls and apps are useful, but their savings are frequently overstated. A controller saves money mainly by avoiding heating water nobody uses. If your tank is correctly sized and well insulated, the remaining saving is modest. If it is oversized and poorly insulated, no app will fix the underlying problem.
