How to Size a Solar Water Heater for Your Roof

Sizing a solar water heater is not the same problem as sizing a conventional one. With an electric heater you match the tank to demand and you are finished. With solar you have to match two things at once: the tank to your demand, and the collector area to the energy your roof actually receives.

Get the tank right and the collectors wrong, and the tank never fully heats. Get the collectors right and the tank wrong, and you either run out of hot water or you pay to store water you never use. This guide covers the roof side of that equation, which is the half most buyers never see explained.

Start With the Tank, Then Size the Roof to Match

A common working rule is roughly one square metre of collector for every 50 to 75 litres of storage in a sunny climate. Treat that as an orientation figure, not a specification: the correct ratio shifts with your latitude, your season of heaviest use and how much of the load you want solar to carry.

Orientation: Which Way the Collectors Face

Collectors should face toward the equator. In the northern hemisphere that means pointing south; in the southern hemisphere, north.

Perfect alignment is not required. Deviating moderately to the east or west costs relatively little output, and there is a practical trade worth knowing: a slight westward bias shifts production later into the afternoon, which suits households whose heaviest use is in the evening. An eastward bias favours morning production.

What does hurt is facing away from the equator. If the only available roof plane points the wrong way, a mounting frame that re-angles the collectors is usually worth its cost, and on a flat roof you can orient freely, which is why flat roofs are often the easiest solar sites.

Tilt Angle

The standard rule of thumb is to set the tilt roughly equal to your latitude for balanced year-round performance. Steeper than latitude favours winter, when the sun sits lower; shallower favours summer.

For most households, year-round balance is the right target, because hot water demand does not disappear in winter. In practice the deciding factor is often the existing roof pitch, since re-angling on a sloped roof adds cost and wind loading. On a flat roof, the frame sets the angle, so use it deliberately rather than accepting a default.

Shading Costs More Than People Expect

Shading is the most underestimated factor in solar sizing, and it is not proportional. A collector that is partly shaded does not lose a proportional slice of output; the shaded portion stops contributing while the system continues losing heat to the surrounding air.

Check for shade across the whole day and across the year:

  • Morning and afternoon, not only at midday when almost nothing casts shade onto a roof.
  • Winter as well as summer. The sun sits lower in winter, so shadows are longer exactly when you need output most.
  • Nearby structures including water tanks, stair enclosures, air conditioning units, parapet walls and neighbouring buildings.
  • Trees that will grow. A sapling that clears the roof today may not in five years.

If part of the roof is unavoidably shaded for hours, size the collectors on the genuinely clear area rather than on total roof space. Installing collectors into shade is buying equipment that cannot work.

Measuring Your Available Roof Area

Usable area is always smaller than total area. Before assuming you have room, subtract:

  • Access and maintenance space around the array. Collectors need periodic cleaning, which in dusty climates is a real performance factor.
  • Row spacing. On a flat roof, tilted rows shade the row behind them unless spaced adequately, and that spacing grows with tilt angle.
  • Existing rooftop equipment, water tanks, and the exclusion zones around them.
  • Edge setbacks required for safety and wind loading.

Also confirm the roof can carry the load. Collectors, mounting frame and, in thermosiphon systems, a full water tank sitting on the roof together represent a meaningful structural load, concentrated at the mounting points. On any existing building this deserves a check rather than an assumption.

How Much of the Load Should Solar Carry?

This is a design choice, not a fixed answer, and it is where over-sizing quietly wastes money.

Sizing collectors to cover your worst winter week means that for most of the year you generate far more heat than the tank can absorb. The surplus has nowhere to go, so the extra collector area you paid for delivers nothing for nine months.

The economically sensible approach is to size solar to carry the bulk of annual demand and let backup cover the shortfall in the worst conditions. Backup is inexpensive next to surplus collector area, which is why every solar installation should include it. An electric element in the tank is the simplest option; a pompa di calore gives far lower running costs where shortfalls are frequent.

Collector Type Changes the Area You Need

Evacuated tubes and flat plates are not interchangeable square metre for square metre.

An evacuated tube collector uses a vacuum layer to stop absorbed heat escaping back to the outside air, so it holds on to more of what it gathers, particularly on cool or partly cloudy days. Flat plates are simpler and cheaper and perform well in consistently hot conditions, but they lose more of their gain when ambient temperature drops.

In practice this means a given area of evacuated tube generally delivers more usable heat across a full year than the same area of flat plate, so a roof short on space may reach its target with evacuated tubes where flat plates would not fit. See our solar water heater range.

Commercial and Villa Sizing

At larger scale the same principles apply, but two additional factors dominate. Roof area becomes the binding constraint far sooner relative to demand, and demand patterns are sharper, so storage has to bridge a bigger gap between when the sun shines and when the building draws.

Common Sizing Mistakes

  • Sizing the tank but not the collectors. A large tank with insufficient collector area never reaches temperature.
  • Ignoring winter shading. A roof clear in June can be shaded for hours in December.
  • Using total roof area instead of usable area. Access, spacing and setbacks all reduce it.
  • Over-sizing to eliminate backup. Surplus collector area sits idle most of the year; backup is cheaper.
  • Assuming an unpressurised system will do. Gravity-fed solar gives weak flow at upper-floor taps, which is the most common source of complaints in two and three storey homes.
